Ruby + Sketchup + Recursion = Sierpinski

My junior year at Carnegie Mellon is going really well! I thankfully only have 2 finals this semester, and so I’m filling my free time with a little bit of long-lost creativity. I’ve been wanting to make a 3D printout of a Sierpinski Pyramid for a while, but struggled on finding the correct modeling software that supported the obvious API need. Well, it turns out that Google Sketchup has a really good interface for interpreting commands using Ruby (Great PDF Tutorial), so it took me only a few hours to finish it!

In other news, in updating WordPress to version 3, parts of my old theme broke. Thankfully new themes are really easy to install in WP, so we’re back up again! New stuff should be coming (DIY DJ!) over Christmas break, so stay tuned…

P.S. A fun related math video!

Lucky you, only have 2 finals. All the best tho :)

  2. Now you need to take the Sierpinski Pyramid Sketchup model to a 3D printer.

  3. @Emily Thanks! Good luck on finals too

@Pat Hillsboro/Century High are sharing a 3D printer. I’m hoping to utilize it finally!

  4. Hi Nolan,

And sadly, I assume you heard that Mandelbrot died:

PS: I’m almost finished building a Makerbot for Domes.

  5. @Eric: Awesome video! Yeah, it’s too bad for humanity that Mandelbrot is now dead. His TED Talk was very good too: http://www.ted.com/talks/benoit_mandelbrot_fractals_the_art_of_roughness.html

    Looking forward to talking!
